A glance in Tranquility wins..!
Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam
The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) were a militant separatist group fighting for an independent homeland for Hindu Tamils in Northeastern Sri Lanka. The LTTE was founded in the early 1970s by Velupillai Prabhakaran, who led the group until his death by Sri Lankan armed forces in May 2009.
The Sri Lankan Civil War
The Sri Lankan Civil War was a civil war fought in the island country of Sri Lanka from 1983 to 2009. For over 25 years, the war caused significant hardships for the population, environment and the economy of the country, with an initial estimated 80,000–100,000 people killed during its course. Supported by the ongoing politics of conflict in Sri Lanka, politicized Tamil youth in the north and east started to form militant groups. These groups developed independently of the Colombo Tamil leadership, and in the end rejected and annihilated them. The most prominent of these groups was the TNT, which changed its name to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, or the LTTE, in 1976.
Why the Ban
India had banned the LTTE after the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi in 1991. Also LTTE has been designated as a terrorist organization by 32 countries, including the European Union, Canada, and the United States followed by India.
The European Court of Justice
EU had not provided any evidence to show that the LTTE were a risk after their military defeat in 2009. So the European Court of Justice removes Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam from terrorism blacklist in 2014.
The London News today
A landmark judgement from Britain’s Proscribed Organizations Appeal Commission found that the Home Office decision to keep the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) proscribed as a terrorist organization was “flawed” and unlawful, and paves the way for the organization to possibly being legalized in the United Kingdom.
